Produced in collaboration with artist Nancy Baker Cahill’s Augmented Reality app, 4th Wall, this work uses material from the Ellis Island archives to examine the liminal space of the immigrant journey: in which the future of the individual confronts the reality of politics and power. The piece is composed of a 500m tall transparent augmented reality drawing seen on the same parallel as the Statue of Liberty, in conjunction with first-hand audio of an early 20th century Italian immigrant recounting the moment she and her siblings were reunited with their father.
A GPS-locked site-specific experience, the key vantage point of the work is while on the Staten Island Ferry (waters immigrants would have traveled), with additional vantage points at former immigration stations (Ellis Island, Battery Park). The work can be experienced through the 4th Wall app, on site in New York City.
