At the heart of the North Star works is the compass rose: the indicator of cardinal directions found on nearly every functional map, including the GPS on our phones. The paintings represent the melting of the cartographic vernacular. A dissolution of the colors, lines and forms that make up the map, and so a dissolution of the power structures that continue to oppress. Line and legend dissolve into interwoven candy-coated landscapes with only navigation evidenced at its heart. Positioned exactly at the center of the work, the orientation is the decision of the owner, creating a reciprocal relationship between cartographer and navigator.
