Exploring the notion of time as a construct, the Temporary Hours works are based on the 13th century principal that day and night hours should differ in length in summer and winter. The laser cut drawing is rooted in a temporary hours sundial developed by 17th century philosopher Thomas Hooke. Temporary Hours were used until the early 1300’s when, with the advent of mechanical clocks, unequal hours fell out of favor and were replaced by the equal hours system with which we are currently familiar. 

Each sundial has been executed by laser cutting, to echo the mechanical precision of time keeping. The title of each drawing is a recorded historic sundail motto; first in its native Latin, then transcribed into English. Every element of the Temporary Hours works reflects the idea of origin and interpretation; down to the very idea of time itself.
